Franklin - A Community Ravaged by
In 2003, the small community of Franklin was
almost destroyed by a tornado. Townspeople have worked
since then to save as much of their community history as
possible. The last surving community structure, St. Philip
Neri Church was torn down but artifacts from the church
were donated to the community. Plans are being developed
to preseve and display these Kansas treasures.
Franklin celebrated Heritage Month with a picnic and
gave out awards including a heritage preservation award.
This a remarkabale recovery for a small community
and speaks volumes for the dedication of the volunteers
who have worked to save the town's heritage.
The bell from the church bell tower has been saved
and the plan is to mount the bell at the top of a sign in front
of their new community center. Many of the church's
interior items have been preserved and beautifully restored
The community is looking for funding to help
restore exterior artifacts as well as funding for display and
long-term conservation of these items. If you would like to
donate to this community's project please contact Phyllis
Bitner, Chairman of the Heritage Committee, Franklin
Community Council, Inc. 620.347.8387.
